Putrajaya Treasure Hunt 2011

The Putrajaya 2011 Hunt was an interesting hunt for me in many ways. It had challenges incorporated, and it was a motor hunt that hardly made use of the motors except to get from one hunting point to another. Furthermore, it was the first time hunting with two other hunters, and yet we had 4 familiar faces making up a 2nd team – The Meeples V1.1. It was really nice to be able to hunt amongst the company of friends, to turn and see a familiar face, motivation for each other I would assume.

It was behind the same motivation I guess that The Meeples V1.1 actually ended up in front of us, at position 23, while we ended up 26th for this hunt. Wern had already mentioned many times the day before that she was sure the other team would do better than us, self fulfilling prophecy at hand?

The Hunt was divided into 3 main sections of 2 hours – cryptic at shops, challenges at parks, and lastly another 2 hours at Alamanda Putrajaya for cryptic hunting again! We actually thought we did the first - shops section quite well, submitting at 10am, prior to the cut off time although we did get one last answer immediately after submission, few seconds too late. Unfortunately, a few answers that we “thought” were fitting were actually bested by other alternatives, and we only got 6/15 Questions for this section, which is probably the worst performance we’ve turned in, in a long time.

Furthermore, with our self admitted – horrible knowledge of our local language – we were caught by Questions which required us to know things such as:

What made it tough was also the fact that for the entire Putrajaya Hunt – 30 Qs in total, all were not in sequence, and the answers were located either on signboards, strollers, manholes on the floor, arcade machines, you name it. Because of the trend of answers being everywhere, we even went for “Passionate” at the Love – Test Meter Machine (20 cents a try only!) for the Question “Fruity Chinese Tea?”, taking ? as the anagram indicator, when the actual answer – Chamelon was BIG BIG in front of us, and I even remarked to Wern and said “Wow, look a business and they can’t even spell Chameleon properly!” Sigh!

Challenges at the park were pretty straightforward and simple. We had bought the map of Putrajaya earlier, and I had also studied the map prior to the hunt, so looking for the Parks were not much of a challenge, and we also had the excellent navigation/driving team pairing of Lim & Siva at the front. The only stumbling block for us came at the “Ulat Sagu”, which did happen to be the first park we reached. Once we feasted our eyes upon that tasty wiggling morsel, I knew that my Fear Factor challenges on previous hunts such as (i) looking for coins in a box of toads; and (ii) transferring worms from one container to another with the mouth, had been bested! Eating this? No way! After much debate with Wern, her rationale being it is a must do as all other teams will do, and mine being “Aiyah” we won’t get top few places so 5 pts won’t matter la.. not worth it, later eat already cannot hunt”, we abandoned the 5 pts.

One interesting section for me was the Morrocan Plaza, where there were 5 questions to answer worth 1 point each, and every team managed to find 4/5 as they were just required to pull the info of the various information boards there. Kudos to the COC for sneakily putting in 1 cryptic question there – we had went round and round without getting the answer when I happened to suddenly see the cryptic side to the answer to get the place!

The last section was at Alamanda Putrajaya, another walk hunt within the mall, and this time we did better with the 15, although not much better with 8 correct! For treasures however, we did get 4 out of 5 which is a pretty good result =)

On overall it was a pretty good hunt, considering the various sections so that the hunters (260 teams) did not clash with each other, but perhaps the only gripe was during submission for both leg 1 and leg 2 – there was only one line for submission which resulted in a very long line and long wait times to submit. For the last part, we noticed that hunters were hunting even after the cut off time of 2pm at Alamanda, and when we called our team mates we found out that they were still in time and we could still hunt! We quickly got off our feet, continued hunting, and even managed to get one answer at around 2.20pm which could still be submitted!

I really hope we can get 2 teams of The Meeples, be it V1.1 or 1.2 to go on hunts, it is really lots of fun to see each other during the hunt itself =)

Digital Mall 4th Anniversary Shop & Hunt

The first open hunt in year 2011, with a very surprising registration of only eleven teams. And there I was a week before, convincing Ming that all regular hunters would've signed up for this hunt in view that not only was it a free hunt, it was also the first hunt after a three week break (from 2512 Christmas Charity Hunt).

So early in the morning of hunt day, Ming and I headed off to Digital Mall two hours before the hunt kick off time in order to avoid the crazy traffic around the area, and of course, to obtain a carpark nearby. No longer than five minutes after parking the car, I realised that I was in trouble, as I felt the churning in my stomach, and the need to get to the loo for a problematic "business number two". Thankfully, after resting at the restaurant for an hour feeling all weak, I managed to regain my energy n' focus on the hunt!

With the miserable 2.5 hours provided for 30 cryptic questions, 6 picture clues and 2 treasures, our preparation work performed two weeks before the hunt proved to be an advantage to us. After kick off, Ming and I sat down at Tang Chao, and managed to work out some of the answers without needing to hunt around in the mall within the mob of people. Our efforts definitely paid off, as our answering of cryptic questions were on par, if not better (wahahaha .. a rare once-off occassion at that!), than some of the teams which had beaten us in terms of positions.

However, as in all past hunts, our (or rather mine in this case, as I was tasked the job of pictorial hunting for a good *or bad in this case* one hour) failure in spotting the pictorial clues (zero points!) cost us dearly, and landed us in fifth position. I wonder if anyone has tips on how one can improve one's spotting skills! *Note: Ming changed his specs di! No diff one!!*

Overall, I personally thought that the questions were very well crafted . But I would've loved it more had the CoC allowed us to keep a set of the questions!  =(

Kicking off the new year the new way ......

To quote Ming on Facebook: 

After all the treasure hunting we have done in 2010, we have decided to do New Year differently, by organizing a treasure hunt that guarantees one of US (amongst friends) will win.

And so we did.

The whole ordeal kicked off a month ago, when Ming and I started informing a group of friends about our "plan" to arrange a hunt ... where the participants only consisted of ... well ..... friends. It was then too, that Ming started drafting the questions and "tested" them on me one fine day. As indicated in my previous post, Val too, did a second round of recce to ensure that the "standard" wasn't set too high for "newbies".

Hunt day arrived, and at 9.30 this morning, a total of 6 teams (consisting of 2 members per team) met up at Ming's house, prepared for a day of "torture". Upon flag off, Ming and myself headed off to SS2 too for breakfast, and of course, watch the participants "suffer". Dao joined in the fun subsequently and chauffeured us around to capture pictures of the teams in action. =)

With a minimal entry fee of RM40 per team, we prepared lunch for everyone and split up the remainder as "cash prizes" for the top three teams.

After everyone had rested for a bit and filled up their tummies, Ming presented the answers to the teams ... which brought about the following facial expressions.......

Kelab TV3 Demam Bola Treasure Hunt

Date - 3rd July 2010

This hunt, was officially the final hunt, the original Team Meeples participated in together for 2010.

If my memory doesn't fail me (since I lost the briefing notes), the hunt consisted of 35 cryptic questions, 5 treasures, and two challenges, which involved the following:

Kicking football

A representative of each team, were supposed to knock down three bottles in a "goal", to score a maximum of ten points (3 points for each bottle, and 1 bonus point if all 3 bottles were knocked down). Each representative was given two shots at the football. First one would be a trial shot, and the second would be the actual shot. My personal opinion, this was completely luck based!

World Cup Trivia

Each team had to answer 25 questions based on the World Cup (current and historical). With Google, it was not surprising to have most teams answer all the questions correctly.

In this hunt, what "upset" our team the most perhaps, was the fact that a third challenge which was supposed to have taken place, were cancelled on the day itself.

Now, during the briefing on the day before the hunt, hunters were shown a video. As the CoC had informed hunters that some of the questions would be based on the video, Aik had smartly captured the video using his camera and sent it to the rest of us the night before.

To prepare for the above "challenge", Ming and I spent approximately two hours going through the video screenshot by screenshot, to identify all the football players, teams, and matches the scenes were captured from. Satisfied we were, that we had done all we could to ensure that no points would be "given away" unnecessarily.

As luck would have it, when the CoC arrived to set up the final challenge, the video couldn't be "screened"!! And for obvious reasons, with the "consensus" of other teams, the CoC decided to cancel the challenge. It was even more upsetting when the CoC decided to merely show us the questions, as it was even more evident to us that we could've answered it all for sure!! *pulkssss*

And we eventually walked away with ninth position, with the following goodies:

Mengo Green Hunt 2010

A week after the J&J hunt, we participated in the Mengo Green Hunt, which was an LRT hunt, in conjunction with the theme "Go Green".

A few days before the hunt, Ming attended the hunt briefing conducted in the evening. Surprise surprise! Two treasure questions were provided during the briefing! Ming texted me right away, and immediately we realised that despite no deciphering needed for the treasures, one of the treasures (i.e. Field Notes pencil) proved challenging to obtain.

After much Googling n' contacting the store (i.e. CzipLee @ Bangsar), Ming sped off after the briefing in hopes of purchasing the "special pencil" before the store closed. Ngwak ngwak ngwak .... he arrived just in time to see the shutter close!  *stressss*

And so early the next morning, Ming dropped by CzipLee again between his appointments. As luck would have it, the shop was still closed (despite the opening hours stated on the website)! And finally, on the third attempt an hour later, we finally managed to obtain the said treasured (literally!) "treasure".

Hunt day arrived, and we headed off to the meeting point happily, having secured both required treasures, only to realise that ALL other teams had accomplished the same!! *bwekz ... syok sendiri ni ....*  

After being flagged off by YB Elizabeth Wong, the four of us embarked on our LRT tour from station to station. As Ming had smartly borrowed his colleague's monthly pass, I managed to save on cost incurred going in and out of the stations! Wheeeeee ...  :p

Hunting on the LRT proved to be VERY difficult, especially for us "amateurs". Signboards were zooming past us as the LRT sped off, which equated to answers zooming past us as well! To spot a correct answer, hunters must already have an idea of what it was they were looking for. And for amateurs like my team, it was literally impossible to attempt deriving the answer by "working backwards".

It was also frustrating when at a particular station, we were required to walk out of the station, cross the road to the opposite side, before we were able to take the train back to the previous station again. At mid point, we finally made a strategic decision to split the team up. Ming and XY went ahead to solve the final questions at KL Central, whilst KC and myself continued on solving questions on the LRT routes.

A wise strategic move? It has its ups and downs of course. With only one set of tulips and miscommunication between the team members, KC and I ended up having to rush to the end point as we had no idea how far the distance was. On the flip side, Ming and XY managed to solve most, if not all of the questions at KL Central. Kudos to Ming too, for putting in the effort to run far far away to purchase a green mango (one of the treasures), which ended up securing us a happy 7th position.

Nevertheless, despite the various obstacles faced, I personally really liked the questions crafted by the COC. Would have enjoyed it a lot more had it been a motor / walk hunt though. Satisfied? Definitely. Would I go for an LRT hunt again? Hmmm ... we'll see.  =) 

Johnson & Johnson - Amazing Explore Hunt Challenge

This hunt came very highly recommended by one of my ex-colleagues back in EY. Was informed that goodie bags were great, and that the cryptic questions were easy. Would definitely agree to both.

However, what we did not expect were the number and type of activities we were required to perform! Neither did we expect the allocation of only 40 / 150 points for cryptic questions! *whines ... confirm jialat di .... *

Format of the hunt consisted of cryptic questions and 5 "stages" of activities as follows:

Cryptic question - 40 points

Stage 1:

KL Tower Picture Hunt - 24 points

In this activity, two members (KC and myself) were required to identify logos and pictures located around the vicinity of KL Tower, based on eight pictures (parts of logos / pictures) provided. Trust me when I say that it wasn't easy!

Tower Walk - 16 points

At the same time, the two remaining members (or at least one member of each team) were required to climb up the stairs of KL Tower. As the two fittest members of our team, Ming and Dao took up the challenge and they both succeeded!!! Apparently, Dao ran up the whole way without stopping once too! Pro-nessssss ..... and from what I understood, most hunters actually sat down by the stairs along the way to catch their breath before resuming the climb. A definite jialated-activity for the "older" hunters I must say ......

Hot Window Spot Hunt - 10 points

Upon climbing up the stairs, the two members were then required to obtain the answers for two cryptic questions by spotting through the binoculars. Thank gawd for Dao who was familiar with KL area, our team suceeded in answering the questions even before looking out the windows! *wheeeee*

Stage 2:

Football challenge - 9 points

In this stage, a team member was required to kick a football through "holes on a wall". Dunno how else to explain la ... go figure. :p  KC took up the challenge and managed to get one through, scoring us three precious points! Apparently, that was the average score for all teams! *phewww*

Stage 3:

Paintball - 10 points

In this stage, two members of each team were supposed to grab two flags, whilst avoiding being shot by .... uh well ... "shooters"? Now, imagine a scenario where two shooters (and by that, I mean professionals!) were standing behind two barrels, aiming their paintball guns at the flags. Two team members would then be running towards the flags (i.e. towards the shooters), and automatically becomes moving targets which were ironically, moving nearer n' nearer the attackers!

Predictably, many teams decided to wave the white flag and left the challenge immediately for fear of being shot at at close range. Damn, it hurts ok! Doesn't help the fact that whether or not a team was able to obtain the flags was entirely at the mercy of these professional paintball "shooters".  >.<

Stage 4:

Lost Shape Of Atlantis - 21 points

In this task, a member was required to get into the swimming pool, look at the puzzles scattered on the floor of the pool, and dictate to the members standing by the pool side how the pieces of the puzzle were supposed to be placed. Sounds pretty simple huh! Guess what? We ended up queuing for a whole freaking hour before we could finally proceed to PERFORM the task, which only took one minute.  =_='''

And just as we thought the hunt was over ....... Jeng Jeng Jengggg ..... came challenge 5 !!!!! Which was ......................

1.  Transferring lil' worms with the mouth from a tray to another
2.  Placing a snake around a team member's shoulder!

Both Ming & Dao were the heroes performing the two tasks. Uber geli okay !!!! *shudders* 

Needless to say, evidently from the post above, I was pretty much useless throughout the whole hunt. Nevertheless, managed to come home with these goodies ...... 

End result? 17th position. Worth it? Go figure.

Green Hunt - Many Species. One Planet. One Future.

Date: 5th June 2010

A very controversial hunt this was. But we shall get into that later.

The day started off with my phone ringing:

Foo:

Eh we're outside your house already

*I jumped up and looked at the time indicated on my phone*

Wern:

Dun bluff la .... so early ... its not even 7 !!!

Foo:

What .. its 7 already larh !! We're outside your house di !!

Wern:

What .. its not laa ... dun bluff la ....

Foo:

Bluff you at this kind of timing for what !

*jumps up and looks at the alarm clock ... screams "OH SHITTTTT !!!!"  *

*screams at Ming as well .... "WHY U NEVER WAKE UP !!!" *

*Ming looks over and replies indignantly "your alarm didn't go off also!!" *

With that, both of us rushed to get ready whilst Aik and Foo waited patiently outside my house. As it turns out, I had accidentally dropped my phone the day before, causing all the parts to "fall out", and upon piecing everything back together, I had forgotten to set the time again. So, it didn't matter the fact that I had set the correct timing for my alarm, because the actual time was already "off off dei" to begin with. *epic phaillllll*

After all the hustle bustle, we rushed off to Shah Alam and walaaaaaaaaaa  ..... amazingly, we were one of the first few teams to arrive. Several teams arrived soon after and surprised we were, that there were only a total of 30 teams who participated in the hunt.

Breakfast was also provided for our consumption, perhaps to prepare us for the range of physical activities ahead!

As it was drizzling, we were briefed shortly before being flagged off. Caps were provided to to us ... so pro lor ... its as if the organizers knew it was gonna rain!  :p

Crossword (14 points)

The exact same puzzle was actually provided to teams who had attended the briefing. However, with no indication that the puzzle had to be solved before the hunt (to benefit those who had attended the briefing), it all boiled down to the hardworking-ness of each individual team to complete the puzzle before the hunt itself.

Green hunt questions (15 points)

Teams were supposed to extract the answers from the information provided in the various booklets and brochures on the environment.

Collection of magazines (5 points)

Each team had to bring in 10kg worth of old magazines, supposedly in five bundles of 2kg each. As I only had a human weighing scale (which can only detect a minimum weight of 2.1kg), we came up with the "brilliant" idea of making Ming stand on the weighing scale, taking down his original weight, and then weighing himself again holding the magazines to ensure that we could get the accurate weight of 2kg in each bundle.

Rock climbing (6 points)

Both Ming and Aik attempted this activity, only to find it tougher than expected. Do believe that it was extremely tiring for them as well although each team was only given 3 attempts.

Archery (4 points)

Aik represented our team! Look at him in action!

Fear factor (10 points)

Foo and Ming were our heroes for this event, sticking their hands into two tanks filled with worms and frogs respectively to collect 5 cent coins. LoL ... gross !!

Paintball (10 points)

Foo managed to obtain precious points for us by hitting the provided target accurately 8 times!

And by the end of the hunt, all of us were drained, both physically and mentally. Yes, including me although I was technically useless throughout the hunt.  >.<

Now, when the results were announced, controversial it was, as the top three teams were allegedly sponsors of the hunt. And had seemingly beat masters and regular hunt teams who had participated in the hunt. Logical? I don't think so. *gives sour grapes look*

Lesson learnt .... in the future, only go for hunts organised by well-known and regular COCs. Personally do believe that transparency in terms of points awarded for winning teams are essential in the organization of a hunt.

Cyberjaya Treasure Hunt 2010

As Cyberjaya was quite a distance from where we stayed, we had to wake up extra early to make it on time. Thankfully, we were provided tons of food for our breakfast. Come to think of it, perhaps it was to provide us the much needed energy for the 'amazing race' aspect of this hunt!!  >.<

Brekkie

The hunt was divided into two parts, constituting 100 points each.

We started with the amazing race element of the hunt, which was made up of the following four "puzzles". Kudos to the organizer for doing a good job of segregating the 120 teams into 3 groups, with each group heading to different pit stops in different sequences to avoid "human traffic".

I believe that we did fairly well on this element of the hunt, with the help of ..... uhh... hmmmm..... technology.  *cough cough*

The cryptic questions were pretty tough ... with some requiring some serious spotting. Thankfully, with a little bit of luck on our side, we managed to find some answers just as we were about to leave the respective sectors......

The eventual outcome .... we amazingly got 7th place and won ourselves RM500 !!! Woo HooOoO !! This has got to be our biggest win thus far !!!  :p

Kembara Asiarasa 2010

This, was our first hunt in 2010, organised by Fun Hunt People.

To be honest, I don't remember much about this hunt, except for the fact that hunters were required to provide explanations on how the answers for the treasures were derived. The new format definitely raised concerns amongst the hunters, as the provision of marks were subjective and entirely based on the COC's personal requirements.

As not-so-pro-hunters, we obviously faced difficulties putting our thoughts into words. Worse was the fact that we couldn't tembak laaarrr!!!   >.<

Jimat Hunt #001 - The Experiment

Date - 7th February 2010

Entry fee - RM150 per team

This was a new motor hunt concept introduced to encourage participation from novice hunters. How was that achievable? By restricting the collaboration of 4 grandmasters / masters / regulars to form a single team!

Teams were only to be made up of the following combinations:

1.   1 grandmaster + 1 regular + 2 - 3 novices;

2.   1 or 2 masters + 2 - 3 novices;
3.   3 regulars + 1 novice; or
4.   3 - 4 novices + 1 regular (eligible for the best novice team prizes)

Definitions of the above were also provided to avoid any disputes:

1.   Grandmaster :  Top 3 (masters category) for Sun Hunt (any year)
2.   Master :  TOS Hall Of Fame Listing (other than above)
3.   Regular :  Top 15 positions Open Category Sun Hunt 2009
4.   Novices :  Other than the above

In addition, the COC also provided assistance to individual hunters who were unable to form teams of their own, by allowing individual registrations and subsequently combining teams for the said individuals. *thumbs up*

Seeing this as a great learning opportunity, I approached Michael and invited him to join our team, and I was pleasantly surprised to receive an instant "ok" from him! In addition, he went further as to encourage other novice hunters to approach other grandmasters / masters on this website.

So on the day of the hunt, we noticed several teams made up of categories 1 and 2. Excited we were, because for once, we were on an even playing field with the rest of the hunters.

However, we found this hunt to be extremely tough (the toughest hunt I've ever been to, albeit it being only my 12th hunt). As Michael described it .. "we almost pitam ...". At the end of the hunt, all I did was stone and tried to recover from my throbbing headache. My personal opinion, I'd have been scared away from the hunting scene if this was my first hunt.

Pokok Tujuh Jarum

The above picture, was one of the treasures we were supposed to obtain. And we ran around like madmen / madwoman, asking every shop if the leaf of the above plant was available. Aik finally found it, situated by the road side!! However, we realised at the end of the hunt, that the plant was actually available at the meeting point (the COC had placed the plant outside the shop), and that it had been clearly indicated in the very first line of the hunt clue ... "Found at the start, middle and at the end..." as we had started, made a pit stop, and ended at the same location. *kicks self*

Nonetheless, despite everything, we managed to obtain fourth position! WoOooo HoOOooO !! Haha... Ming and I kept mumbling "haihhh no more dee la" after the COC announced the 10th position... and only Aik remained optimistic till our team name was announced.  :p

All in all, it was an interesting experience as we did learn a fair bit from Michael. The methods of deciphering, the approach to take when we were stuck etc.... and I must say that we did learn to apply those skills in our future hunts.  =)

Amazing Kidneys Walk Hunt

Date - 14th March 2010

This hunt was held in One Utama, and we definitely felt that we had a possible advantage over other teams as it was "our territory". I mean .. c'mon .. I frequent this place at least once a week! To shop!  *yes, and hence I'm always broke .... *

Ming and I came earlier to have our lunch, before meeting up with KC and Swei, only to find out that the hunt had been postponed by 1.5 hours. See la ... never check e-mail before coming is like that one lor! *in my defence, I had no internet access till the hunt day as I was in Singapore*  :p

SoooOooOO Cuteeeee!!!

As this was Shiou Wei's third hunt (first time with us), we didn't have to provide her any guidance! And she was pro lorrrr !!!  Also, as expected, being frequent patrons of One U, we definitely benefited by knowing the location of all the shops located in each floor (it saved us precious time!).

In addition, I very "semangatly" extracted the directory of all the shops in One U, and sorted them into different floors and precincts. Glad to say, it wasn't a waste as we managed to identify some of the answers before we even left the "meeting point".

End result? We ended up in 8th position, bringing back a hamper each. *happiness*

Viva Le Sport @ Berjaya Times Square

Gung-ho-ly, the four of us decided to participate in this hunt despite having a wedding to attend that evening. Perhaps ... because it was somewhat free and we are that cheapo. Haha ......

A week prior to the hunt, Ming and I booked a room at the Dorsett Regency Hotel to ensure that we had sufficient time to shower and change into our attires before heading off to Noble House (near our hotel). To add to the stress (ya larh... I know its "ji gei lo lei" one ...), Aik and I were the emcees for the night, whilst Ming was responsible for preparing the slideshows for the evening. So proo lehhh ...... LoL ... =p

The hunt was sports themed, and very well organized. However, sports themed as it was, also dun need to make us run liddat la right !! Not only was the time provided very tight, we were also required to perform 2 different sports activities during the course of the hunt:

Golf
Try to hit the golf ball into the hole lo ... duh ....

Throw n' catch
One person (blindfolded) will throw the ball from one end of the room to his/her partner standing on the other end of the room, who will catch it with a pail whilst standing in a hoola-hoop.

Apart from that, we were also required to identify the various sports brands sold in a few specific shops (of which, one was located on the 7th floor of the complex).

Based on the points provided for each "category", the sports activities definitely played a big role in the determination of the positions. Thankfully, both the Meeples teams ended up within the 5th - 10th position and brought back RM100 worth of vouchers (RM50 Nike + RM50 Adidas) each.

Nesvita Omega Plus Nutrition Hunt

Well, since this was a free hunt, why not go for it right?!?! Haha ... *cheapo alert*

So Ming and I woke up early in the morning and headed off to One Utama for a really enjoyable hunt. Apart from the normal cryptic hunt questions, we were also given "pictures" to look for around the many many Nestle booths set up for promotional purposes. Can behave like small kid lo... spotting pics.  :p 

Best part of the hunt? Anytime we walked past the Nestle booths ... someone would be offering us food! However, as we were so rushed for time (only one and a half hours provided to hunt), we had to keep rejecting them and say "later okay laterrrr... I will come back  ... I PROMISE !! Busy now !!" So paiseh okay ... and can't believe I was rejecting FOOD lor!  >.< 

But of course, we really did return later larhhhh ... promised di ... brought Sean and Foo along too !! Extra patrons k !!  :p
